In its native range across Central and South America and the Caribbean, Clidemia hirta is an unremarkable, densely-branching shrub that colonizes disturbed ground — roadsides, pastures, forest edges. Move it to the Pacific islands, and it becomes something else entirely: one of the most aggressively invasive plants in the region's tropical forests, known locally by the pointed nickname "Koster's curse."
What makes it so effective as an invader
Clidemia hirta produces enormous numbers of small, bird-dispersed berries, tolerates both sun and shade, and — critically — behaves differently outside its native range than within it. In its home range, the species rarely establishes inside intact, closed-canopy forest; it's mostly confined to already-disturbed, open ground. In its introduced range, it does the opposite, readily invading the shaded understory of old-growth forest, where native seedlings then struggle to compete for light and space.
Why the same species behaves so differently
The leading explanation is the absence of natural enemies. In its native range, a combination of specialist insects, fungal pathogens, and competing vegetation appears to keep Clidemia hirta largely confined to disturbed habitat. Without those checks in an introduced range, the same plant's underlying traits — fast growth, heavy seed production, shade tolerance — are free to express themselves far more aggressively.
Nothing about Clidemia hirta changed when it crossed an ocean. What changed was everything around it that used to keep it in check.
Management
Control efforts in affected regions have included manual removal, herbicide application, and — with mixed and carefully studied results — biological control using natural enemies from its native range. This last approach requires extensive testing to avoid introducing a new problem while solving an old one, and remains an active area of ongoing management rather than a solved issue.
